Essential historical sources of documentation on NASA photographs, its vintage publications — mainly issued in the form of richly illustrated brochures — as well as those of its contractors such as Jet Propulsion Laboratory concerning the Voyager and Viking missions, provide valuable elements for understanding and appreciating these images within their original context.
Contemporary publications are generally rather superficial from a scientific and educational standpoint, except in the case of images from the Hubble Space Telescope, for which one can find interesting publications intended for the general public.
