NASA. Rare view of the Ranger VII probe before encapsulation. Ranger VII was intended to be propelled toward the lunar surface before crashing into it. Fifteen minutes before impact, a complex system initiated image capture using television cameras that transmitted their images to Earth by radio waves. The Ranger missions were the first missions to provide humankind with close-up views of the lunar surface and to give an idea of the actual consistency of the lunar soil. July 23, 1964.
